Marian Higgins will be giving a résumé building workshop in room 482 in the Tate Center at 6 pm! *note the slight change in time and location (it's not in the MLC at the usual 7pm).
We had to do this to work for Ms. Higgins' schedule. Here's a link for a little info on her :) She's the career consultant for the Grady College.

Everyone please remember how important attendance is! We want to show that we are appreciative of them and their time.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Simmons had a last minute emergency and will no
longer be able to join us this week for the meeting.

However, we will still be meeting to collect dues and to discuss some
of the plans for the year!

You definitely want to come to this meeting, we will discuss what dues

ideas for the upcoming year.. etc.

Hey everyone! I think the first meeting was overall a success and I am
very excited about the turn out!

Our next meeting will be with Kelly Simmons the editor of georgia
magazine. It will be on Wednesday Sept. 15th, at 7 PM. It will be in
ROOM 247 in the SLC (or MLC I guess for you younger kids)

Please bring $10 for the club dues. This will cover your dues for the
entire year, and is a very reasonable price considering you will get
food at every meeting!

Officers for Next Year

Hi All--

As school is coming to a close, we're going to start looking at candidates that are interested in being a Mag Club officer next year. There are going to be 2 positions next year, so if you are interested please send me (katemparham@gmail.com) your resume with a brief decription of why you want to be whatever the position you're applying for is. Nothing fancy/formal, just a few sentences describing what you'd like do as an officer. Here are the 2 positions you can apply for:

1. President: The president is responsible for coordinating all meetings. There is no list of people that you can get to come speak, so your primary job as president is brainstorming ideas for meetings, researching who in the GA area could speak on that topic, and contacting said person to schedule a meeting. This is a lot more work than it sounds, and it requires a BIG time commitment. You will also have to contact Campus Reservations to request rooms for each meeting. In addition to all of that, the president oversees everything else that goes on with the club, is responsible for updating the website and getting the word out about meetings, sending out information over the listserv, and responding to emails. It's a great way to make some good connections in the magazine industry, not to mention a HUGE RESUME BUILDER!

2. Secretary/Treasurer: This person is responsible for handling all of the finances for Magazine Club. Basically, this position is the President's wingman. They buy the food for each meeting, collect dues, and keep track of all the paperwork. This person will also help the president in times of need.

Applications are due by APRIL 14TH @ 7PM. New officers will be announced at the final Mag Club meeting of the semester, on April 21 @ 7 pm. Good luck!

Budget Updates

Hi Everyone.

Jordan and I attended a budget meeting for the year this morning and I've got several updates for everyone.

1. Unfortunately, we are going to have to charge dues this year. On the plus side, all of the other Grady clubs' dues are above $40 and we're just going to charge $10 each for the entire year. While anyone can still come to the meetings, there are several things that the club will do such as field trips, workshops, etc. that you will only be able to attend if you have paid your dues. If everyone could please bring $10, cash or check, to the next meeting, that'd be swell! We're going to be keeping a lot closer track of who has paid and who hasn't, so please don't try to skip this. In order for the club to have food at the meetings, get the speakers here and go on field trips, etc. we have to have money to do all of those things. I'm sorry that we're having to charge dues, but that's just the way it is...

2. For those interested in attending the MAGS Conference: The good news is we can still go on our field trips and the admission ($10) to attend the conference will be paid for you! The bad news is, unless we want our meetings to be food and speaker free, we're going to have to foot the bill for the gas. Right now, we have two volunteers (myself and Marianne) to drive. If nobody volunteers, we can't get there. I need 3 more drivers! If we put 5 people to a car, it will be less than $8/person to attend the MAGS Conference. This is well worth it. However, if you cannot afford to attend the trip anymore, I need to know ASAP.

So, to review.. I need 3 people to volunteer to drive. It's going to cost about $8 to attend this conference. If you can't go anymore, please let me know.

3. For those interested in attend the Paste Field Trip: Right now, we have one volunteer (myself) to drive. I need 4 more drivers! If we put 5 people to a car, it will be less than $8/person to attend the field trip at Paste. Considering the experience we'll get at the magazine's office, this is well worth it. However, if you cannot afford to attend the trip anymore, I need to know ASAP.

So, to review.. I need 4 people to volunteer to drive. It's going to cost about $8 to attend this field trip. If you can't go anymore, please let me know.

First Meeting

Hey Everybody!

Hope everyone's first day of classes went well. I just wanted to give you all some updates about the field trips and our first meeting.

The Paste Field Trip will be from 9:30-11:00 am on Sept. 21. PLEASE RSVP ASAP! We're going to try to get a carpool together also, so I definitely need to know how many people will be attending. I would imagine we would probably leave Athens around 8 am that morning in order to get to ATL by 9:30. This is going to be a great learning opportunity! You don't want to miss it!

Same thing goes for the MAGS conference that is in ATL on Sept. 10th. Again, PLEASE RSVP ASAP!

Our first meeting is going to be held in SLC Room 251 at 7pm on August 26th. It is just going to be an informational meeting where we will talk about the upcoming year, get everyone's feedback and of course, eat some FREE FOOD! Hope to see everyone there!

Hello All,

I can't believe summer is nearly over and in just a few days, we'll be back at school. How did this happen? I hope you all had a great summer and although, I'm dreading classes starting again, I'm super excited about Magazine Club this year. I've already got a lot of speakers lined up for the fall, a field trip to Paste scheduled, and another field trip for a conference in Atlanta. I wanted to write to clue you guys in on a few things and to ask you a few questions. So, let's get started:

1. Our first meeting will be August 26th. This is just going to be an introductory meeting where we will discuss what we have planned for the school year and see where we can fill in some holes to really get the most out of the club this year. If you have any ideas, suggestions, comments, etc. that you'd like to get off your chest now, PLEASE email me (katemparham@gmail.com) and let me know. I'd love to hear your suggestions.

2. I'm interested in attending a MAGS conference in Atlanta this fall. If you think you'd like to attend this event, which you definitely should :), PLEASE EMAIL ME AND LET ME KNOW. We're going to have to give them a heads up and make a reservation. End of the Year Updates

Hello all!

Well, the year is coming to a close, we had our last meeting tonight, and finals are all too quickly approaching. Thought I'd finally quit bothering you and finish the year with one final update:

Jordan Biasetti will be the Secretary/Treasurer for the 2009-2010 school year. Congratulations, Jordan!
I will be the President again next year (please try to contain your excitement).

If you have any ideas, suggestions, complaints, etc., I'd love to hear from you. I thought that this year was pretty great, but I want next year to be even better and I really want to make that field trip happen. I've got a lot of great ideas, and now that I've finally got this whole "president" thing down, I think we should have a fabulous year at Mag Club.
Make sure that you're subscribed to the list-serv and keep checking back for more updates over the summer.

That's all I've got for now, but knowing me, I'll be back in a couple of days with new information. Please don't hate me... but tonight's meeting has been cancelled. Tova Gelfund, our speaker tonight, had some last minute deadlines and is not going to be able to make it up tonight. That's the magazine industry for ya, I guess. Don't worry, though, the meeting is going to be rescheduled, as Tova really wants to come share her story and tips with Mag Club.

I'm really sorry to keep cancelling meetings at the last minute, but sometimes these things are just unavoidable. I hope none of you are discouraged and will be at our next meeting on March 25th. Heather Nagel-Doughtie from Skirt Magazine is going to talk about her success as the Digital Media Director. This will be a great meeting for those interested in New Media. WEDNESDAY NOV. 19 AT 5 P.M. in ROOM 267 of the MILLER LEARNING CENTER.

There will be free food: McAlister's Deli sandwiches, chips, and drink. Please come hungry! Andrew Tucker (photojournalist), Professor Mark Johnson (Photojournalism Professor), and John Curry (Athens Banner Herald Photojournalism) are scheduled to speak about methods and techniques in the field. We will also have a photo contest where anyone can bring a hard copy of their best photo to enter into a small contest. Everyone will vote and the winners will receive gift cards. Don't have a photo? Wednesday, November 19th at 5pm Andrew Tucker, a photographer with work featured in GA Magazine, will be here to speak about photojournalism. We're going to try to make this a more interactive meeting-- so a photography contest will take place at the meeting, complete with prizes and free food! Anyone interested in the photojournalism aspect of magazines, this meeting is for you! Bring your best work!!!

This meeting is our Internship Panel Meeting, so if you've ever wondered exactly what you need to do to get an internship at a magazine, what to expect once you've been hired as an intern, and what the next step after an internship is-- this meeting is for you! OK everyone, we have officially rescheduled the yesterday's meeting for

Wednesday Oct. 1 at 7 pm.

The meeting will be in the SLC (we'll send out another announcement when the room number has been assigned). This is the meeting where students involved from other magazine related organizations will be coming to speak about how you can get involved on campus. So far, we have members of the Little Red Book, Stillpoint, Georgia GuardDawg, and UGAMiracle scheduled to appear. If you haven't paid your dues yet, please bring a check or cash in the amount of $10 to the meeting. Hope to see everyone there!

1st Meeting Review

Hey everyone! We had an amazing turnout at our first meeting last Thursday!!! I think this year is going to be incredible. We've received a TON of inquiries about what went on at the meeting, so for all of those that missed it, here's what we discussed:

1. First and foremost, everyone make sure that you are subscribed to the MagClub listserv!

2. This year, because of Grady's fund reallocation, we will be charging $10 dues for the entire year. This will cover all expenses related to guest speakers, field trips, food, etc. Please make your check out to UGA Mag Club and either bring it to our next meeting or drop it off in Dr. Hume's office.

3. Our second meeting is going to be near the end of September. We're going to have a panel of students involved at other magazine related organizations on campus to come and talk to everyone about ways that they can get involved. This will be a great way to find out where your work can be published, photographs printed, editorial skills put to work, etc. Just keep checking back on the website for more detailed information about the date and time of the meeting-- we should know by the end of the week.

3. We have been discussing a field trip to a local publishing house, perhaps at Paste. The details have not yet been worked out, but we just wanted everyone to know what types of activities we have in mind for the year. In addition to this field trip, we have an internship related meeting in the works, as well. If anyone knows of UGA students that have had an internship at a magazine that would be willing to come speak, PLEASE get us the contact information for them so that they could come to the meeting. We hope that this meeting will help our members figure out exactly what they need to do to get an internship, what to expect once they have one, and everything imbetween.

4. We passed out a survey that I would love for everyone to fill out, if they have not already, so that we can get an idea as to what everyone is interested in/hoping to get out of being in MagClub. I will attach a copy on the website, so whenever you get a chance, please just fill it out and bring it to our next meeting.

That was really all we discussed, so if you didn't make it to the first meeting, DON'T WORRY! You can come out at any time to join MagClub! Hope to see everyone at the next meeting!

I know everyone is just getting settled after the first week of school and is eager to decide what they want to be involved in this year. We're trying to get updated information to you as soon as possible, so please bear with us for the time being.
